FRANCES STACHL JEWELLERY

Made in Aotearoa

Mostly silver. Often oxidised.
Sometimes gold. Occasionally, with organic elements.

Kia ora, I’m Frances. I make jewellery in Whanganui, in my workshop ‘A Place for Hammers’.

Jewellery is how I make sense of things. Each piece begins with a shape, a material, or an idea — sometimes personal, sometimes shared. Some are made in multiples. Others are made just once, as commissions.

You can find my work here in the shop, or in galleries around Aotearoa.

What I’ve made lately

All of my work is made in small numbers. Just a few at a time, depending on what I’m making.

Made for those who use their waha, and for those who are still finding their voice.

The first pair of these was made for a friend who saw the prototype for them on my workshop wall and said ‘ooo, I like that waha!’. That little nudge was what I needed to take them off the wall and make them on of my regular production works.

Originally hand cut from an old ten cent coin these earrings are cast in sterling silver and then have golden eyes added before polishing.

My use of this coin seeks to reclaim iconography and remove it from the setting of currency.

This ten cent coin design first circulated in 1967, engraved by English born Reginald George James Berry.
